“A poem is never finished, only abandoned.”

I used to think that this Paul Valéry quip was ridiculous and wrong, but now I feel like I understand it all too well. I would consider that a sign of artistic growth.

I just watched the Gatsby trailer, and I have to admit it looks pretty spectacular. Not in a good way necessarily, just in a very Baz Luhrmann way. Even though I’m not convinced that any of the casting choices were remotely correct, I feel slightly more open-minded about the movie now. At the very least, it will be an aesthetic delight.

And I’m not even going to talk about Glee.

jewtinachronicles:

Oberlin College; Spring 1947.

I hope that some of the amazing outside-of-Oberlin plans I’ve made with people in the last week become realities, because of course now is when I start to realize how much I’ll miss some of them.

While that was the stupidest episode of Glee I’ve seen in a while, I must admit that I fucking loved Brittany’s prom ensemble. She was the only girl wearing anything remotely interesting (Luke, before you yell at me, Quinn and Rachel looked amazing too, albeit boring) and as soon as I saw it I thought it must be a nod to the insane dresses of the Viktor & Rolf Spring 2010 collection, which remain pretty much my favorite pieces of clothing I’ve ever seen. Unconventional formalwear is da bomb.

The theme of the next two weeks:

Memorizing happiness instead of indulging in sadness.

Drinking with Emma in my room and having emotional conversations is so much better than stupid, loud parties. I didn’t think I would miss anyone if I left here, but now I know I would definitely miss her.

The short story I started for Monday makes me wildly uncomfortable and will probably offend people, and while an enormous terrified part of me is thinking scrap it and write something stupid and impersonal, another part of me is thinking those might be good reasons to write it. I feel so not up to the task, but it’s not like I ever will. No time like the present.

It’s already one of my favorite movies, but I get more and more interested in Closer every time I watch it. The characters are fascinating; I really need to read the play, because I’m sure they’re even more so in their original medium.

Anonymous asked: some of your favorite movie acting performances?

Shit. There are many. But Nicole Kidman in The Hours, Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, Meryl Streep in Doubt, and Colin Firth in A Single Man are probably my top four. They disappear so completely into their characters and are just awe-inspiring to watch.

Elizabeth Taylor in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is so terrifying and powerful. Ditto Charlize Theron in Monster. And oh god Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry is heartbreaking.

Also along the biopic lines: Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind, Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line, and Sean Penn in Milk are beautiful to watch. They all bring poetry to the men they’re portraying.

I think Jennifer Westfeldt in Kissing Jessica Stein and Kate Hudson in Almost Famous are two of the most perfect performances I’ve ever seen. Nobody could have been better choices for those roles, and if it weren’t for them I definitely would not rewatch those movies as often as I do.

AND MELANIE GRIFFITH IN WORKING GIRL. FLAWLESS.

Friends, do this, I want to see what yours are!
